Design & Building in İstanbul, TR
In the early years of our profession, the things we saw, executed, and experienced shaped our vision of architecture.
The projects we have been part of have had an immense impact on us, shaping our perspective and teaching us valuable lessons about design itself. These experiences not only influenced our design perspective but also sparked the need for a space where we could reflect on who we are as architects and what our values and approaches truly are. This realization led to the creation of On/Off Site—not just as a platform for showcasing the work we took part, but as a collaborative space for exploration, dialogue, and growth. Through On/Off Site, we aim to document and share our projects, ideas, and insights as we continue to evolve in our professional journeys. Our goal is to create an ongoing archive that reflects our experiences, challenges, and discoveries, allowing us to engage in meaningful discussions with peers and enthusiasts alike. We look forward to accumulating our work over time and keeping you updated on this ever-growing journey!

About
We believe that achieving the intended design to enhance the user's spatial experience requires a thoughtful approach, and interior design serves as a valuable tool in this process. It not only allows for a deeper understanding of architectural details but also provides insight into user behavior and spatial patterns, ultimately shaping a more functional and meaningful environment. This project shown on right serves as an example of how the interior design process enables us to recognize and integrate these details into real-life applications.

POL-SE Clinic is a pediatric healthcare facility located in a residential area of Giresun, Turkey. The clinic spans a total of 70m² across two levels. The entrance and waiting area are situated at street level, while the medical offices are located on the first floor. These spaces are connected by a vibrant yellow staircase, complemented by a gallery that provides visual continuity between the levels. Designed with adaptability in mind, the clinic is intended to evolve over time to meet changing needs.

While practicing architecture in a wide range of renowned offices, gaining a deeper understanding of different architectural approaches became inevitable.
It would not be surprising if we say we feel privileged about the people that we had a chance to work with. All of the processes in these different environments provided valuable insights about every aspect of architecture, design and visual arts.

Located on the ridge of the valley, Tatarcık Residences define two distinct axes along this ridge. The blocks parallel to the road and the row houses are connected by a gently sloping communal street, surrounded by various green spaces of different sizes. The structures, designed to accommodate different levels of privacy, user experiences, and numbers, feature front and back gardens depending on their placement along the axis. While open terraces of varying typologies and sizes are positioned to create spatial privacy, they also maintain a balanced relationship with shared spaces, fostering social interactions within the communal street.

About
We had the opportunity to engage with residential designs across a wide range of scales, from 100m² to 290,000m², each presenting distinct challenges and requirements. These projects varied in typology, including multi-purpose developments, energy-efficient solutions, and semi-rural dwellings, each requiring a unique approach. While the fundamental goal of residential design is to create spaces for people to live in, the surrounding context, user needs, and functional demands play a crucial role in shaping the architectural process. As a result, each project becomes a distinct case, requiring tailored design strategies that respond to its specific environment and purpose.

The project will be realised by the property development company Gross & Partner and the (equitable) consortium UNS + HPP. The original project design was created by Amsterdam-based UNStudio. It was the entry for an architectural design competition launched by Gross & Partner at the beginning of 2017, in which the office prevailed against ten international participants. This was preceded by an urban design competition to redesign the 16,000 square metre site, which the practice had also already won.

The construction methodology combines on-site and off-site techniques to ensure efficiency and cost control. The ground floor is designed to be constructed on-site using concrete and heavy steel composite methods. In contrast, the residential units consist of prefabricated modules, enabling up to 85% of the construction to be completed in a factory, often in another country. These modules are designed with precise dimensions to facilitate transportation by truck. Upon arrival at the site, they are assembled with minimal additional workload, requiring only installation labor. Wooden shades, as a final touch, are added to complete the construction process.
Each project has enabled a space for us to grow, a constant need for new skills to grasp, new details to learn and execute, and new ideas to generate.
Being in a workspace that pushes you to be more of you is a fruitful space to be in the early years of expertise. Each day starts as a whole different day to learn fully different things, and that is what makes us more excited about the future!

About
Culture is a complex field that profoundly influences architecture. The showcased projects explore cultural norms from various perspectives, integrating them into the design process. Some spaces evolve with their users, others adapt to renovations, and some use locally sourced materials to reflect their surroundings. These approaches highlight how culture shapes architectural expression and spatial development. A key insight from these projects is that cultural complexes are not limited to the present—they are rooted in the past and continuously evolve toward the future, creating an ongoing dialogue between history, contemporary needs, and future possibilities.

These blocks are produced and stored on-site in dimensions suited to their purpose. With the help of a crane installed at the end of the machine line, the "Earth Tower" rises. As the blocks stack up, the excavation expands. The excavation itself becomes the fundamental element that forms the earth mine structure. When the excavation— the Earth Mine—reaches its final geometry, the Earth Tower is also completed. This proposal envisions a structure emerging from the ground within an infinite horizontal landscape, where all levels of the stacked program offer views of the solar field and the surrounding geography.

Even though professional life has been an important source of learning, as peers, we have gained irreplaceable lessons from friends.
Creativity is often fueled by collective effort and shared excitement. In architecture, our work revolves around understanding problems and translating solutions into a set of drawings. Experiencing this process in different environments has helped us grasp the importance of friendship and the value of learning from one another. Understanding the structural needs as an architect starts from understanding the basics of the humans needs, evoking from the communication in workplace, as known as chit-chats in the breaks!

The eclectic structure approaches the urban planning considerations of the existing complex in a similar manner. Like the existing school building, the STEM School consists of two interlocking cubes of different heights, slightly offset from one another. Together, the two school buildings create a central rectangular courtyard, adding a new quality to the school complex as an inward-facing schoolyard in addition to the existing break areas. The entrance on the courtyard side of the extension is directly opposite the entrance of the existing primary school building. Between the two main entrances, a suspended spatial circulation route extends, establishing the architectural, spatial, and functional connection between the extension and the existing building.

About
Public projects are centered on understanding the daily patterns and interactions of a community or specific groups within it. Each project is shaped by a distinct perspective on everyday challenges, allowing for the development of thoughtful and effective spatial solutions. Unlike many other design typologies, public spaces serve a wide range of users with diverse needs, making them inherently complex. As a result, public use is a broader and more inclusive concept, containing a wealth of embedded information derived from people’s actions, behaviors, and social dynamics. This depth of understanding allows architects to create spaces that are not only functional but also meaningful and responsive to the evolving needs of the community.

About
Last but not least, showcasing something that reflects your effort is one of the first lessons we learn in architecture school. Each jury acts as an own exhibition for every individual, allowing us to present our work and ideas. Experiencing this process on a much larger, collective scale was both exciting and motivating. Moreover, it offered valuable insights into how architectural projects can be documented and presented as exhibition materials, transforming their context and narrative from their foundational concept to a broader, more public understanding.
